How Couples Counseling Can Help

Our experienced therapists use an evidence-based approach, including Gottmann Relational Therapy and Emotion-Focused Therapy to create a foundation of mutual respect and understanding.

Entering into marriage is a significant life event, and being well-prepared can make a big difference. Our premarital counseling helps you and your partner build a solid foundation by tackling important topics like communication, expectations, and conflict resolution before they become bigger issues.

Good communication is key to a healthy relationship. At The Marriage & Family Institute, we teach you and your partner practical ways to communicate better. You’ll learn to share your thoughts and feelings openly and honestly while also developing the skills to listen to each other. Better communication means fewer misunderstandings, more peaceful conflict resolution, and a deeper emotional connection.

Trust is the bedrock of any strong relationship, and therapy can help you and your partner rebuild or strengthen yours. Through open conversations and supportive guidance, we assist you in creating a balanced dynamic where both partners feel valued and respected. This involves fostering mutual reliance without losing individuality and cultivating a partnership based on honesty, reliability, and mutual support.

Every relationship changes over time, and so do roles and expectations. In couples therapy, we help you explore and clarify these evolving roles to ensure mutual understanding and harmony. Discussing responsibilities, decision-making, and future plans can create a shared vision for your relationship. This clarity reduces conflicts from misunderstandings and aligns both partners toward common goals.

Intimacy is more than just physical closeness; it includes emotional connection and vulnerability. Our therapists guide you in enhancing both aspects of intimacy in your relationship. Whether you want to improve your sex life or deepen emotional bonds, we provide a safe space to explore desires, fears, and aspirations. By fostering deeper intimacy, you can strengthen your bond and rediscover the joy of being emotionally connected with your partner.

Secure attachment is essential for a healthy relationship, providing a sense of safety and support. In therapy, we help you and your partner develop secure attachment styles by exploring past experiences and current relationship dynamics. We work to build trust, responsiveness, and emotional availability, even in tough times. Strengthening attachment fosters a deeper emotional

Conflicts happen in every relationship, but how you handle them makes all the difference. Our therapists teach you constructive conflict-resolution skills that increase understanding and promote mutual respect. You’ll learn to navigate disagreements calmly, improve distress tolerance, and find solutions that strengthen your bond. Effective conflict resolution helps your relationship grow and become more resilient.

The Gottman Relationship Checkup: A Science-Based Starting Point

To provide the best care possible, we recommend that all couples complete the Gottman Relationship Checkup ($45) before or early in counselling. This confidential, online questionnaire is designed by the Gottman Institute and gives both you and your therapist a detailed picture of your relationship dynamics.

Completing the checkup helps identify your strengths as a couple, as well as areas that may need more attention. It allows us to begin counselling with a clear, research-based baseline instead of spending multiple sessions gathering the same information.

We know it can feel like “just another form,” but couples consistently find that the Gottman Relationship Checkup makes the counselling process more effective, focused, and personalized right from the start.
