What Is Co-parenting Counseling, And How Can It Help?
At The Marriage & Family Institute, we understand that co-parenting after separation or divorce can be one of the most challenging transitions a family faces. You both want what’s best for your child, yet communication, trust, and shared decision-making often feel harder than they should. Our co-parenting counseling services are designed to help you move past old patterns, reduce conflict, and build a calmer, more cooperative partnership.
Parenting together after a breakup requires a new kind of teamwork that’s built on respect, consistency, and shared commitment to your child’s well-being. Through co-parenting counseling, you’ll learn how to communicate clearly, set healthy boundaries, and handle emotional triggers with more calm and control.
Our integrative approach combines Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Parenting Coordination to help you navigate tough moments, rebuild trust, and create systems that keep your child’s needs at the center. Together, we’ll help you transform frustration into teamwork and lay the groundwork for a peaceful, stable future for your family.

How Co-parenting Counseling Can Help
Our experienced therapists use evidence-based approaches, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), to help you step out of the conflict cycle and learn practical ways to communicate, cooperate, and find some peace again.
Strengthen Communication
Tough conversations don’t have to turn into arguments. In co-parenting counseling, you’ll learn how to say what you mean without it getting lost in tone or tension, and how to actually hear each other, even when you disagree.
Handle Conflict Without Escalating
You can’t control every reaction, but you can control how you show up. Together, we’ll practice ways to pause before things spiral, keep your child out of the middle, and problem-solve instead of rehashing the past.
Set Clear Boundaries And Expectations
When everyone knows what to expect, life feels more manageable. We’ll help you create predictable routines, clarify responsibilities, and find a rhythm that works for both homes.
Stay Grounded When Emotions Run High
Old wounds and strong feelings can still surface. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we’ll help you understand your emotional triggers and learn how to stay calm and steady during tough moments.
Work Toward A Shared Vision For Your Family
With tools from Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Parenting Coordination, we’ll guide you in shaping what “family” looks like now. You may not be partners in the same way, but you can still be united in giving your child consistency, warmth, and belonging.

How Co-parenting Counseling Works
Initial Joint Session (or Separate Intakes if Needed)
We begin by understanding each parent’s perspective, areas of tension, and goals for co-parenting. If emotions are high, we may start with individual intakes to ensure each parent can share safely and openly.
Individual Follow-Ups
Each parent meets individually for one or two sessions to process emotions such as grief, resentment, or anxiety, and to develop self-regulation and communication tools.
Ongoing Co-Parenting Sessions
We continue with joint sessions (virtual or in-person) to practice new communication strategies, establish clear parenting boundaries, and create systems that support consistency for your child.

Questions About Co-parenting Counseling
Do we attend therapy together or separately?
It depends on your level of conflict and comfort. Many parents begin with individual sessions so each person can share their perspective privately and build emotional regulation tools before meeting together. Once readiness and safety are established, we shift to joint co-parenting sessions where both parents work on communication, boundaries, and problem-solving with therapist support. The focus is not on reconciling the relationship, but on creating a calm, cooperative environment for your child.
What if my co-parent refuses to come to therapy?
You can still make meaningful progress on your own. Individual co-parenting work focuses on managing your reactions, communicating effectively, and setting healthy boundaries, even when the other parent isn’t participating. Often, as one parent begins to model calmer communication and clearer boundaries, the dynamic naturally shifts—and sometimes that encourages the other parent to join later.
Will therapy help us stop fighting?
Yes—if both parents are willing to learn and apply new tools. Co-parenting therapy teaches practical communication skills, emotion regulation techniques, and strategies for de-escalating conflict before it affects your child. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress toward a more peaceful, businesslike partnership focused on shared parenting goals.
How is co-parenting counseling different from couples therapy?
Co-parenting counseling is not about repairing the romantic relationship—it’s about rebuilding your parenting partnership. The emphasis is on structure, stability, and teamwork. We address lingering emotional wounds only to the extent that they interfere with effective parenting, keeping sessions forward-focused and child-centered.
What outcomes can we expect?
While every family is different, parents often report:
- Fewer arguments and faster resolution of disagreements
- Improved communication and clearer boundaries
- Less stress during transitions and handoffs
- More consistency and security for their child
- A sense of relief knowing they can work together—even if they’ll never be close friends
