It shouldn’t be so hard…

…to talk to my partner without it turning into a fight.
…to stop having the same argument on repeat.
…to feel understood in my own family.
…to figure out how to fix this instead of just rehashing it.

When the same patterns keep playing out, you stop expecting things to change. You’re exhausted, you’re bracing for the next fight, and the people you love feel further away than they should.

At The Marriage & Family Institute, we use Structural Family Systems Therapy to help you understand the dynamics driving the conflict and rework them in ways that lead to lasting change.

What Is Structural Family Systems Therapy And How Does It Work?

Structural Family Therapy focuses on the underlying patterns that shape how a family functions. Every family has its own way of operating: the roles people slip into, who talks to whom, who steps in when things get tense, and who pulls away. Most of the time, no one’s tracking it consciously. But those patterns shape how every conversation in your house goes, and when something’s off in the structure, you keep having the same fight, and it feels like nothing ever changes.

At The Marriage And Family Institute, your therapist watches how you interact with each other so that together, we can name what’s happening between you in the moment, and help you try something different right there in the room. The shifts that happen in session then start to translate into shifts at home.

This approach tends to help most when the same patterns have been replaying for a long time, when your family is moving through something big like divorce or separation, or when parent-child conflict is starting to wear on everyone in the house. It also helps couples who keep landing in the same fight and want to figure out why they keep ending up in that place.

Structural Family Therapy Can Help With:

If you’ve tried couples therapy or family therapy before and felt like you were venting without anything changing, Structural Family Systems Therapy works differently and can help your family get to a renewed place.

What Changes When You Work On Family Dynamics

When you’re caught in recurring conflict, it can feel like the people you love most are the hardest to be around. Structural family therapy offers a way to break the cycle and relate to each other in a healthier way.

You’ll learn how to express what you need, listen without getting defensive, and have hard conversations that move forward instead of looping back on themselves.

Together we’ll look at who’s doing what in your family, what’s working, and what needs to shift. Healthier roles and clearer boundaries take pressure off everyone.

Instead of trying to win the fight, you’ll learn to see the pattern underneath it. That’s where the lasting shifts happen.

As the friction comes down, the connection comes back. You’ll find more space for warmth, trust, and the kind of everyday closeness that’s been missing.

When the family system steadies, daily life feels less reactive. You’ll notice less tension, fewer flare-ups, and more capacity to enjoy each other again.

Our Approach

How Structural Family Systems Therapy Works

We start by getting to know your family, the roles people play, the way conflict shows up, and the patterns that keep replaying. Understanding the dynamics is the first step to changing them.

Next, we explore the boundaries, hierarchies, and communication patterns driving the conflict. This is where you’ll start to see why the same issues keep coming up, and what’s holding the cycle in place.

Your therapist will guide live, in-session interactions to help shift those patterns as they happen. It’s hands-on work, and it’s where the biggest changes tend to take root.

You’ll leave each session with communication tools, boundary-setting strategies, and practical skills you can use at home. The work in session is designed to translate into the rest of your week.

Questions About Structural Family Systems Therapy

Structural family therapy is an evidence-based therapy approach focused on how family members interact with each other. It helps identify the patterns, roles, and boundaries causing conflict, and works to restructure those dynamics so your relationships can grow healthier and stronger. Rather than just talking about problems, this approach helps you change them in real time.

This approach is more active and structured than traditional talk therapy. Instead of only discussing what’s been happening, your therapist will guide live interactions in session to help shift unhelpful patterns. You’ll see the dynamics play out, and then practice new ways of communicating and connecting while you’re in the room together.

Not necessarily. While involving key family members can be helpful, this work can still be effective with individuals, couples, or partial family participation, depending on the situation. Your therapist will help you figure out the right mix based on what you’re trying to change.

It depends on the complexity of the dynamics and what you’re working through. Some clients notice improvements within the first 4 to 6 sessions. More entrenched family patterns tend to benefit from longer-term work to fully restructure how everyone interacts.

Yes. Structural family therapy is particularly effective for parent-child conflict. It helps establish healthy boundaries, improve communication between parents and kids, and create a more balanced family structure where everyone knows their role.

The names sound alike, but the approaches are pretty different. Structural family systems therapy (developed by Salvador Minuchin) works with the people in your family, the relationships, the roles, the boundaries, and how everyone interacts day to day. Internal Family Systems (IFS, developed by Richard Schwartz) is an individual therapy approach that works with the different “parts” inside your own mind. One looks at the system of people in your home; the other looks at the system inside one person. They can complement each other, but they’re solving for different things.

This comes up all the time. The short answer is yes, you can still make progress. When one person changes how they show up in the family system, the rest of the system tends to respond. Plenty of meaningful work happens with individuals and partial family groups, particularly when the people who are in the room are committed to the work.

Yes. It’s been researched and practiced since the 1970s, with a strong track record for family conflict, behavioral issues in kids and teens, eating disorders, and substance use challenges. It’s also one of the most widely taught family therapy models in graduate training programs, so most experienced family therapists have some background in it.

This is one of the contexts where structural family therapy is at its strongest. Teen behavior often makes more sense when you look at the family dynamic around it, the boundaries between parents and kids, where roles have gotten blurred, and how everyone reacts when tension comes up. When the family structure shifts, the behavior tends to shift with it, without the teen feeling like they’re the one being “fixed.”

Yes it can! Blended families come with extra layers: different histories, parenting styles, loyalties, and routines all meeting under one roof. Structural family therapy gives you a way to look at the new family structure together and figure out where the friction is coming from. We work with biological parents, stepparents, kids, and ex-partners when appropriate to help everyone find their footing in the new dynamic.

Positive Outcomes Of Structural Family Systems Therapy

Because structural family systems therapy works on the deeper patterns, it can take some time to see progress, but over a few months of consistent work, you might start to notice:

The family is the natural context for both growth and healing.
