Is your teen struggling with the effects of trauma?

Being a teenager can be challenging, especially when traumatic experiences make it difficult for your teen to feel safe, confident, or in control of their emotions. If your child has been recommended for Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), they may benefit from a program that addresses the unique ways trauma affects their life—and that’s where we come in at The Marriage & Family Institute.

Our 8-week TF-CBT Group Therapy for Teens is a supportive, evidence-based program specifically designed for adolescents aged 13 to 16 who are dealing with the impact of trauma. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an effective approach that helps teens and their families process trauma, reduce negative thought patterns, and build resilience for a healthier future.

Skills Your Teen Will Learn in Trauma-Focused CBT Group Therapy

Emotional Regulation, Resilience, & Self-Compassion

Trauma can leave teens feeling overwhelmed or out of control. Emotional regulation skills help them identify, manage, and respond to intense emotions in healthier ways, reducing outbursts and enabling thoughtful decisions. At the same time, acceptance skills teach teens to let go of shame or self-blame by validating their emotions and focusing on what they can control. These combined skills build resilience, empowering teens to face challenges with confidence, maintain emotional stability, and move forward with hope and self-compassion. Teens learn to set realistic goals, embrace their strengths, and develop a more positive outlook on their future.

Reframing Negative Thought Patterns

Trauma often leads to cycles of negative thinking, which can impact a teen's self-esteem and outlook on life. Through trauma-focused exercises, teens learn to recognize and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. These skills allow them to approach their experiences with a healthier perspective, improving their decision-making abilities and strengthening their sense of self-worth.

Improving Relationships & Building Supportive Connections

Trauma can often strain relationships, leaving teens feeling isolated or misunderstood. Relationship maintenance skills teach teens how to nurture positive connections, resolve conflicts constructively, and recognize when a relationship is no longer healthy. By focusing on communication, emotional regulation, and boundary-setting, teens can form lasting, meaningful connections that support their healing and growth.

Improved Sleep & Daily Routines

Trauma can severely impact a teen’s ability to sleep or maintain healthy routines. Through trauma-focused CBT group therapy, teens learn strategies to improve their sleep hygiene, such as relaxation techniques and creating consistent bedtime routines. Better sleep leads to improved mood, energy, and overall mental health, enabling teens to face each day with greater clarity and resilience.

Questions About TF-CBT Group Therapy For Teens

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a short-term treatment that typically lasts 12–16 weeks, but our group therapy program is structured to be completed in 8 weeks.
TF-CBT can help teens and their families address trauma-related issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and fear. It also supports parents in developing better parenting skills and creating more supportive interactions with their children, fostering healing for the entire family.
No, a PTSD diagnosis is not required for a teen to receive TF-CBT. This therapy is effective for anyone experiencing trauma-related symptoms, even without a formal diagnosis.
You can expect therapy to be both challenging and rewarding. A TF-CBT therapist will start by assessing your child’s trauma symptoms to determine if TF-CBT is the most appropriate treatment. Sessions are structured, with clear goals and activities for both your teen and you as a caregiver. While there will always be time for the therapist to check in about the past week, each session is designed to focus on specific therapeutic tasks that help your teen progress.
It’s completely normal for children to feel hesitant about discussing painful memories, and TF-CBT takes this into account. Therapy allows children to gradually approach their past at a pace that feels safe. Along the way, they’ll learn coping skills to manage distress, which can make confronting those memories feel less overwhelming. This gradual process can be deeply healing for both the child and the family, helping everyone move forward.
