Slow things down so
you can think clearly

Have calmer conversations
with less conflict

Figure out what
comes next

It shouldn’t be so hard…

…to know whether to stay or leave.
…to stop going in circles about divorce or separation.
…to talk without every conversation turning into a communication breakdown.
…to feel confident in a decision that affects your whole life.

When a relationship reaches this point, many couples feel stuck. One partner feels ready to leave. The other still wants to try.

At The Marriage & Family Institute, discernment counseling offers a calm, structured way to slow things down and find clarity about what comes next.

What Is Discernment Counseling And How Can It Help?

Discernment Counseling is for couples who feel stuck in the in between. One part of you may be leaning toward staying. Another part may be wondering if it’s time to let go. Divorce or separation might feel possible, but making a decision feels heavy and overwhelming.

This is not traditional couples therapy. The goal is not to fix everything or force a decision. The goal is clarity. Discernment counseling gives you space to slow things down and understand what’s really going on for you and your partner before taking the next step.

Sessions include a mix of individual time and time together. This gives each of you room to be honest about your fears, hopes, and doubts without pressure to convince the other person. Many couples find relief in having a structure that takes the heat out of the conversation and replaces it with understanding.

This approach can be especially helpful if you feel frozen by indecision or exhausted by the same conversations on repeat. Over time, discernment counseling helps quiet the mental noise so you can think more clearly, trust yourself again, and move toward a decision you can live with.

From there, you choose the path forward together. Whether you decide to commit to couples therapy for a set period of time, continue discernment counseling if clarity is still forming, or decide to move toward separation or divorce, the focus stays the same. We walk with you to help you feel grounded, informed, and at peace with your decision.

How Discernment Counseling Can Help

If you feel pulled in two directions and unsure which decision to trust, discernment counseling helps you slow down and figure out what choice feels right for you.

You will have space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and hopes without being pushed to decide before you are ready.

Slowing the process often lowers conflict, defensiveness, and communication breakdown, so conversations feel safer and more grounded.

Discernment counseling gives you space to look at your own patterns with honesty and compassion, without blame or finger-pointing.

Whether you choose to stay together or separate, the focus is on helping you feel at peace with your choice.

This process supports calmer, more respectful conversations, even when the relationship is coming to an end.

Our Approach

How Discernment Counseling Works

We start by slowing things down and understanding what has brought you here. Each of you has space to share how the relationship feels right now. Feeling heard comes first, before any decisions are made.

In individual sessions, you explore your own thoughts, fears, hopes, and what you would need to see change. This is where you reflect on what you want, what you need to see change, and the pros and cons of continuing to try.

In couples sessions, your therapist helps you share what you are learning about yourself in a calm, respectful way, to help you understand each other more clearly and see whether change feels possible.

At the end of each session, you choose the next step. If you are not ready to decide yet, we will revisit where you are and what you need. In the end, our main goal is to help you make a decision you can stand behind.

Questions About Discernment Counseling

Discernment counseling is for couples where one or both partners are unsure about how to move forward in their relationship. Divorce is on the table. Couples therapy feels premature. Someone is leaning out. Someone else is still leaning in. Nobody wants to make a life-altering decision in panic or pressure. There is often a lot of hurt, distance, or unresolved pain, and one or both partners feel torn about whether to stay, separate, or try again.

Couples therapy works best when both partners are willing to pause thoughts of divorce or separation and give the process time. When that level of commitment is not there yet, couples therapy can feel frustrating or stuck. Discernment counseling helps you sort through mixed feelings first, so you can decide whether you want to make that commitment.

A few key things that make discernment counseling different:

  • It’s time-limited. Often 1 to 6 sessions.
  • It includes individual time and shared time.
  • It honors ambivalence instead of pushing past it.
  • It reduces the pressure to perform or promise change too soon.

When someone feels unsure about continuing the relationship, jumping straight into couples work can feel overwhelming or premature. Individual sessions give each partner space to reflect on their own feelings, fears, and hopes. This helps you think through the pros and cons of committing to couples therapy and move forward with more confidence and clarity.

Discernment counseling focuses on clarity rather than changing the relationship itself. The work centers on understanding how ready each person feels to commit to couples therapy. If you both decide to move forward together, meaningful relationship change usually happens during the couples therapy process that follows.

Discernment counseling typically takes one to six sessions. The process continues until you and your partner feel clear about whether to commit to couples therapy or move toward separation.

Positive Outcomes Of Discernment Counseling

Discernment counseling can be a powerful step toward helping you find clarity and steadiness during a confusing time. While every couple’s experience is different, many people leave this process saying things like, “I finally feel clear,” or “I can live with this decision.” With support and reflection, you may begin to notice:

“Clarity brings peace, even when the decision is hard.”
