Common Questions
What happens in a consult call?
Your consult call is a brief (about 15-20 minute) conversation designed to help us understand what you’re looking for and ensure we match you with the best-fit clinician.
During the call, you can expect to:
- Share your goals for counseling and what’s bringing you in (for example, relationship concerns, anxiety, or life transitions).
- Learn more about our approach at The Marriage and Family Institute — we integrate mind, body, and relational health to create meaningful change.
- Ask any questions you may have about therapy, scheduling, fees, or insurance options.
- Discuss next steps for getting started, including scheduling your first session or being matched with a clinician who best fits your needs.
The call is not a therapy session, but rather a chance to make sure you feel comfortable, informed, and supported from the very beginning.
What do I need to do to prepare for a consult call?
Prior to the consult call, our office staff will send you screening paperwork to complete. Please log into your client portal and complete these brief screening and intake documents before your appointment. These forms help us learn a little about you and match you with the clinician who best fits your needs.
If your consult will be held online, we recommend downloading the Telehealth by SimplePractice app ahead of time. You’ll receive an email or text message about 10 minutes before your scheduled time with a secure link to join the call.
During the call, we’ll review your goals for therapy, go over your free insurance benefit and eligibility check, and discuss the next steps for scheduling your first session.
Our goal is to make the process simple, supportive, and stress-free so you can focus on what matters most—you.
Do you take insurance? How does that work?
Yes, we accept insurance! The Marriage and Family Institute is considered an out-of-network provider for most insurance plans. We complementarity submit claims to your out-of-network insurance provider on your behalf for potential reimbursement. Many of our clients receive partial, if not full reimbursement directly from their insurance company, depending on their plan and deductible.
To make this process easier, we offer a free insurance benefit and eligibility check, which is reviewed during your consult call. This allows us to help you understand your coverage, estimate potential reimbursement options, and decide what works best for your needs before getting started.
If you’d like to use your benefits, we recommend also contacting your insurance company to confirm your out-of-network mental health coverage. Helpful questions to ask include:
- “Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?”
- “What percentage of each session fee is reimbursed?”
- “Is there an annual deductible I must meet first?”
We also offer self-pay rates and a limited number of reduced-fee options for those experiencing financial hardship.
What to expect if I schedule a first appointment after the consult call?
The diagnostic assessment usually consists of three sessions. Your first appointment is an initial assessment session focused on understanding your background, current concerns, and goals for therapy. Together with your clinician, you’ll discuss what brought you in, identify priorities for treatment, and explore what approach feels like the best fit for you.
We’ll also review confidentiality, practice policies, and answer any questions so you feel comfortable moving forward. Most clients leave their first session feeling heard, supported, and hopeful about their next steps.
